1st Muhammad Ibrahim Joyo Essay Writing Competition (MIJ-EWC)

Concept

Writing essays is essential for learning. Writing is perceived as a natural talent that students either possess or lack. However, one learns via essay writing that writing skills can be developed with effort and practice. It then serves as an inspiration to pick up further skills in the same vein. Writing essays encourages critical thinking, which helps students consider a problem and draw a conclusion. It helps pupils to evaluate arguments to develop better viewpoints. Students get the ability to consider various perspectives via the use of critical thinking.

Objectives

The MIJ-EWC has the following objectives:

  • To enable students to practice and perfect skills transferable throughout their learning career and into their profession.
  • To enable students to build up a formal and organized method of writing that passes information without a doubt
  • To help students in organizing their thoughts, build vocabulary, and a distinct writing style.
  • Taking this as an inspiration, the Department of English, Sindh Madressatul Islam University Karachi will organize this competition every year covering a different topic each year. The 1st MIJ-EWC on is being organized on the following topic:

    “THE ROLE OF INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY FOR A BETTER PAKISTAN”

    Standard Operating Procedures

    Following are the rules and further details regarding the competition:

    1. Emails with the subject line “Essay Writing Competition” must be sent to mij.ewc@smiu.edu.pk.  All entries must be submitted by January 16, 2023.
    2. No submissions will be accepted for the competition after January 16, 2023. The competition organizers disclaim all liability for the timely transmission and subsequent storage of any essay submitted for consideration.
    3. An attachment of the essay in Word (or a comparable format) is required.
    4. Times New Roman, font size 12, and single-line spacing are required for the essay.
    5. English must be used in all submissions.
    6. All students enrolled in SMIU’s undergraduate degree programs are eligible to enter the essay competition.
    7. Judges will only accept one submission per person.
    8. The email will be used for any communications with the participant. To get more notifications, the participant should check their email.
    9. Each essay must be authored and submitted by just ONE student, without any assistance from a second person.
    10. The essay must be the author’s original work. No work that has already been published will be accepted. All essays submitted will be carefully examined for plagiarism; those that are found to be plagiarized will be disqualified. Entrants are expected to be aware of any SMIU policies and guidelines regarding plagiarism.
    11. The judges’ decisions on any prize awards in the competition are final and cannot be appealed. Essays will be evaluated based on their language, inventiveness, and content quality.
    12. The following guidelines for topic, length, and style should be followed by all essays submitted:
      • The essay should start with a cover page that includes the word count and the title of the article.
      • The essay’s word count cannot exceed 1,500. (Excluding figures and references).
      • The essay must be in Word format (or equivalent).
      • References, in any preferred reference format, should be added after the article.

    13. The following are prizes for the winners of the essay writing competition:
    14. The first prize is worth PKR 15000, the second prize is worth PKR 10000, and the third prize is worth PKR 7500.

    15. Prize recipients can anticipate having their names posted with their entries on the university website or official Facebook page.
    16. English Department maintains the right, in its sole discretion, to replace another reward for any prize without prior notice.
    17. The English Department maintains the right to refuse to award any or all awards if, in their sole discretion, they determine that no essay submitted justifies the awarding of any or all prizes (s).
    18. Prize winners are allowed to mention their accomplishments on their resumes.
    19. The English Department retains the right to publish or reprint any portion or the entirety of any essay submitted for the competition. English Department maintains the right, in its sole discretion, to omit, change, paraphrase, or remove any part of any essay when it is reproduced, for any reason.
    20. The English Department maintains the right to end the contest at any moment and for any reason.
    21. The judges’ determination on how these rules should be interpreted shall be final.
