Panel Discussion on Transforming Karachi into a Sustainable and Livable City Held at SMIU

The Faculty of Science, Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) organized a panel discussion on “Transforming Karachi into a Sustainable and Livable City” during the 3rd Global Research Congress (GRC-2025).

The panel featured Mr. Waqar Alam, Senior Hydrogeologist (USA); Mr. Ahmed Shabbar, environmentalist and waste management expert; Mr. Yasir Hussain, Director, Climate Action Centre; and Mr. Muhammad Imran Sabir, Director (Natural Resources), SEPA.

The speakers discussed key urban challenges facing Karachi, including groundwater depletion, waste management, air pollution, climate change, and environmental governance. They emphasized sustainable water management, renewable energy, climate-responsive planning, protection of natural ecosystems, and stronger enforcement of environmental regulations to improve the city’s resilience and livability.

The session was moderated by Mr. Saquib Ejaz Hussain, an award-winning environmental consultant.
