SMIU Environmental Science Students Conduct Research Study at Keenjhar Lake

Karachi: Students of the Department of Environmental Sciences at Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) conducted a comprehensive research study at Keenjhar Lake in District Thatta under the supervision of faculty members Mr. Khalid Hassan and Mr. Naeem Samo. The study visit, organized in collaboration with WWF-Pakistan, involved 30 students.

The research focused on three key areas: water quality monitoring, ecological and biodiversity assessment, and socioeconomic surveys of communities living around the lake. Students collected surface and groundwater samples, recorded sampling locations using GPS technology, and conducted onsite environmental assessments. The samples will undergo further analysis at SMIU’s Environmental Science Laboratory.

The participants also carried out biodiversity surveys of the wetland ecosystem, documenting wildlife habitats and species through field observations and specialized survey techniques. In addition, they visited turtle ponds and a butterfly pollination garden to better understand the ecological importance of the lake.

As part of the socioeconomic study, students surveyed nearby villages to gather information on income, employment, education, health, and poverty levels. The activity provided valuable insights into the environmental and social challenges faced by local communities.

The field study offered students hands-on research experience and strengthened their understanding of the interrelationship between environmental conservation, biodiversity, and community development.
