SMIU Students Encouraged to Explore Sufi Literature Through Theatre
Sindh Madressatul Islam University hosted a captivating theatre performance titled “Sassui Punhu: A Journey of the Soul”, organized by the university’s Literary Society in collaboration with Arts Council of Pakistan. The play was based on the timeless folktale from Shah Jo Risalo by renowned Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
Speaking at the event, Assistant Professor Wafa Mansoor Buriro highlighted the spiritual and cultural significance of Sindh’s literary heritage and urged students to engage deeply with Sufi literature for intellectual and personal enrichment.
Directed by Muhammad Taha Nadeem and written by Zaheer Abbas, the play featured notable performances by Sartaj Amir as Punhu and Maya Soomro as Sassui, portraying themes of love, sacrifice, endurance, and spiritual devotion. The production vividly depicted Sassui’s painful journey in search of her abducted husband Punhu, symbolizing the mystical struggles celebrated in Bhittai’s poetry.
President of the Literary Society, Ali Mehdi Abro, appreciated the efforts of the organizing team and reaffirmed the society’s commitment to promoting classical literature through creative and contemporary artistic expression.
The event received wide appreciation from students, faculty members, and literary enthusiasts for successfully connecting Sindh’s classical Sufi heritage with modern theatre and performance art.
